Diet, Exercise, & Soap?
63Diet, exercise and soap?
As the majority of consumers become well informed of the subtle dangers in the ingredients of many personal care products, have many incorporating natural skin care products to their lifestyle for fitness and health. What does soap have to do with fitness and health you ask? For one to be physically fit would require a healthy immune system, overall health and strength to exercise.
The skin is the largest organ of the body and it is permeable. It is like a giant sponge that absorbs everything it comes in contact with, especially solvents and petroleum based chemicals like (sls) sodium Laurel sulfate, found in many skin care products. These chemicals over long periods of time accumulate in the body’s organs and tissue leading to many health issues. So not only is it important to eat right and exercise, but we should be mindful to what we are putting on our bodies as well.
Terry Friedman a Denver physician states, “To stay healthy, people have to do more than just exercise and eat healthy. Consumers should also avoid personal care products that contain toxic synthetic ingredients that penetrate the skin and accumulate in there tissues. In some cases, these products can have greater impact on health than either diet or exercise,” (Essential Oils Desk Reference, 2009). Many health professionals today agree and recommend avoiding synthetic products as case study upon case study reveal high levels of petroleum based carcinogenic chemicals found in fatty tissues of those being tested.
What looks good on the outside may not be so good on the inside
There are many who will exercise like crazy but obtain a horrible diet, justifying it by the amount of exercise that they do, or those with a high metabolism who may be extremely active could very easily justify a sweet tooth all day long. Just because on the outside one may look healthy, the junk that is consumed could be causing great harm on the inside. The same goes for the skin. We do not see any immediate harmful effects when the skin absorbs such toxins, but in the long run could be causing havoc on our overall well being.
This being said and understanding how this large organ “the skin” works is it clearly safe to say that it’s not just diet and exercise like Terry Friedman states that will keep us healthy and fit. Perhaps what we absorb through our bodies on a daily basis is also a significant factor to our well being.

This is so true, I just read an article talking about the difference between natural and organic, people think it's the same but it's not...Most cosmetics are nothing but toxins going into your pores and changes your skin, I beleive in good organic food and soaps, and bath products of all kinds. Yes, this is a rate up up up, excellent hub, I am impressed with you as a hubpages writer, farmer of all organic products and a soap makes. Love you my dear friend, peace darski
A view point worth considering. New to me, but I think very valid.
Good hub. Thanks.
Voted up and useful.
Since the skin is the largest organ in our body, we need to be concerned about it. This is another excellent hub with great tips. I enjoyed it very much.
I absolutely agree, we need to do what we can to care for our skin, just as we care for the rest of our bodies with eating well and good work outs. I have been considering this more and more. Thanks for sharing, A.B.
Thank you Ron for the very helpful diet exercise and soap tips. It does make sense that everything we come in contact with is absorbed through our skin. Thanks again this makes sense! :) Katie
Wow! This is a very interesting connection. I knew that those products were not ideal, but had no idea that they are just as important in determining your health as diet and exercise. Thanks for a great, informative hub!

I so agree with this. I think there are so many toxins that we can pull in through our skin, and so many of them are things that we do to ourselves and not just environmental things. Great hub, as usual!
