Moringa Flower

Strongest Weapon against Malnutrition

The miracle tree Moringa has gained much recognition lately due to some amazing discoveries. Moringa oleifera comes from the family Moringaceae and genus Moringa and is often called the drum stick or bottle neck tree. This amazing tree is a fast grower reaching nearly 10 feet in its first year of being planted. The Moringa tree is drought resistant and loves heat and full sun, and is native to sub-Himalayan tracts of Northern India, and has spread eastward from India to the lower parts of China, Southeast Asia and the Philippines.

The reason why the Moringa tree is considered to be the miracle tree and strongest weapon against malnutrition is every part of this tree offers so many valuable health and economic benefits. The tree’s leaves, flowers, fruit, bark, roots and seeds are all used for food, medicine, skincare, purifying water, disinfectant, fertilization and even fuel. This is a tree that is easy to grow and because it grows so fast, cultivation in large quantities is made easy. Many malnutrition organizations and clinics are diligently spreading the message about the Moringa tree and trying to plant as many of these trees as possible and to educate on how to use the many benefits this tree has to offer.

Nutrition from the Moringa tree

The Moringa tree is an excellent source of vitamin C, beta-carotene, protein, iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium and contains essential amino acids and antioxidants.  Many consider the Moringa a super market on a tree and here’s why.  The Moringa is said to have gram for gram three times more iron than spinach, quadruple the amount of vitamin A than carrots, as much protein as eggs, four times the amount of calcium than milk, three times more potassium than a banana, and seven times more vitamin C than oranges.  Quite impressive wouldn’t you say?  This is the ultimate tree of nutrition which is why many church organizations and malnutrition outreach programs are helping to distribute and plant so many of these trees in areas where nutrition and food lack.

Moringa Oil

Moringa oil is compared to the quality of olive oil and has a bright yellow color to it.  The oil is describe to have a pleasant taste and is used for many things other than cooking, from fueling up machinery to healing the sick.  Moringa oil is becoming very popular in the skincare and cosmetic industry as it is commonly used as a skin moisturizer and hair conditioner and as a base in perfumes and used to make soaps as well.  Moringa oil is used in aromatherapy, massage therapy and found in deodorants, face creams, and anti aging wrinkle creams.  The oil pressed from the Moringa seed is full of fatty acids and both vitamins A and D.

Purifying Water With Seeds from the Moringa

Moringa seeds purifying water

The crushed seeds of the Moringa plant are used to purify dirty water from rivers. The seed powder not only diminishes pollution but harmful bacteria as well. The powder joins with the solids in the water and sinks to the bottom. It is said that 15 seeds are needed to purify 20 liters or 5.28 U.S. gallons of water. This is a very affordable water purification system. Malnutrition is not just the lack of, or poor quality of food, but lack of clean water is the cause to so many illness and death. Purifying water through Moringa seeds will allow so many who can’t afford expensive water purifiers to now have access to clean and safe drinking water.

Medicinal uses of Moringa

There are so many medicinal properties this wonder plant offers. You can reap some of the medicinal benefits by simply brewing a tea with its flowers, or relieve a headache by just rubbing the leaves on your temples. Every part of this tree has some sort of healing property. The leaves offer antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects that are great for wounds and insect bites, the flowers juice is known to increase the quality and flow of breast milk, the pods when eaten raw act as de-wormers and are used to treat liver and spleen problems as well as joint pain.

The fact that this tree is so easy to grow, and will grow well in the worst growing conditions and still offer so many life saving attributes is no wonder this tree is referred to as the miracle tree, the tree of life, the magic tree.

I suffer greatly from inflammation. It really eats me up. I try to avoid medicines. I am now only taking one hydrocodone per long bike ride. It's one 2 or 3 times a week. I just have to. I take anti-oxidants. I eat well. I've gotten my diet really close to what it needs. But I'd like to test the properties of this for the inflammation. Thank you for putting this together!

I'm heading for bed now with a pretty strong headache. God bless rpalulis!

I'm lucky enough to grow this tree which is popularly called the drumstick tree in India. The 'drumsticks' grow to a length of a metre and is incredibly tasty in a curry. We use the bark to make homemade mustard blended with mustard seed and other ingredients. Grows from cuttings as well and the flowers and tender leaves make a delicious meal fried with garlic and dried chilllies.

I.am one of the lucky ones to live in a climate warm enough to grow this miracle tree. I just planted seeds last month and have two small tres growing on my patio. They will lose their leaves come winter if I leave them outside but I am planning on moving them to a greenhouse once I get lighting. I also am starting a cosmetic line and plan to use moringa oil in all of my products. I hope everyone passes on information about this tree so that more and more people can benefit from such an amazing tree! Thanks and keep up the good info.

barbiemannas, good to hear from you again! Hope all is well. I too have not been a very active hubber this season. My work starts from sun up to sun down- the life of a farmer, really miss hubbing and hope to start reading, commenting and writing more hubs again real soon. My computer also crashed, currently on a friends laptop. Once my computer is fixed and or I get a new computer I will be ready to start hubbing again. Take care- Rob

barbie mannas 11 months ago

Didn't expect to hear from you Rob, thanks for your kind response. I tried getting back on the hub scene, but this borrowed computer is blocking my new password. I'm away from home again and will be back in Bangalore in late Sept. I've been researching different kinds of herbs and making marvelous discoveries. I hope I can remember my old password and make an effort to pen down a few of my observations. Till then, good luck on the computer scene.
