Oil of Oregano- The Strongest Most Effective Antibiotic Known to Man
89Wild Oregano
Mountain of Joy
Oil of Oregano comes from the species wild Oregano (vulgare) and should not be mistaken with the common household Oregano (marjoram). Wild Oregano grows in remote mountainous areas of the Mediterranean, and is known to have amazing antifungal and antibacterial properties as well as being a potent antiviral and anti parasitic oil that reduces, inflammation and fights off infections.
The oil is extracted by both cold processing and steam distillation from the leaf of the plant. The ancient Greeks were of the first to record and recognize Oregano for its medicinal properties, and the word, “oregano” also comes from the Greek meaning, mountain of joy. Ancient Greek physicians like Hippocrates was recorded to use Oregano to treat stomach and respiratory disease, and 15th century physician Paracelsus used Oregano to treat diarrhea, psoriasis, vomiting, jaundice, and fungal diseases.
Two major compounds found in Oil of Oregano
Oil of oregano contains two key compounds which are carvacrol and thymol. Carvacrol is a natural phenol that has powerful antimicrobial activity, and is able to inhibit the growth of several bacteria strains. Both these compounds have proven to have significant effects on harmful microorganisms that cause harm to the body. It is important when buying Oil of Oregano to make sure that it contains a minimum 70% concentration of carvocrol, and that the oil is taken from wild Oregano and not common household Oregano.
Most effective antibiotic known to man
Oil of oregano has an outstanding track record for building the immune system, obtaining antibiotic, antiseptic, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti venom, and anti parasitic abilities, but most importantly anti-pleomorphism , which essentially is shape shifting. Bacteria, fungi and viruses have the ability to change form in the body which changes the chemistry within the body. Oil of Oregano is deadly to all pathogens no matter what form they assume. This makes Oil of Oregano the worst enemy to Super Germs.
Super Germs
Super Germs are the germs that have become resistant to antibiotics. The overuse of antibiotics by doctors has created mutant germs that have become resistant to antibiotics. This is why many of the antibiotics today are ineffective. ABC news reported not too long ago that MRSA is now resistant to 15 to 30 different antibiotics. These new antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria are getting out of control. There are statistics reported all over the web stating that infections acquired while in the hospital kill more people than Aids, breast cancer, and auto accidents combined, said to be the 4th leading cause of death in the US. Recent reports are now stating that infections such as MRSA which were once believed to only be picked up in hospitals are now infecting those in the general public as well. More and more new epidemics such ebola are on the rise. Our meats have been more recently contaminated with mad cow disease; salmonella and e-coli bacteria in chicken, parasites in sushi, and many of the antibiotics are becoming ineffective due to antibacterial resistant Super Germs.
Why oil of oregano is such an effective antibiotic
Essential oils that have antibacterial properties such as Oil of Oregano, Tea Tree oil, Patchouli, Lavender, Geranium have been reported to effectively kill these Super Germs, however large drug companies refuse to fund further research due to the fact they cannot patent the oils, source; www.heritageessentialoils.com. The reason these oils are much more effective in killing these germs are due to the complexity of the chemical constituents found in essential oils. These oils have hundreds of components to them making it extremely difficult for bacteria to become resistant.
Oil of Oregano side effects
Oil of Oregano given all of it healing power is completely appropriate to title this oil the best natural antibiotic known to man. As good as Oil of Oregano may be, there are some side effects that you should be aware of.
1. May reduce the body’s ability to absorb iron, regular use of Oregano is recommended to be combined with other iron supplements. Not recommended for women during pregnancy.
2. Another reason pregnant women should avoid Oil of Oregano is that it can stimulate blood flow in the uterus, weakening the lining that surrounds the fetus in the womb.
3. If you have any allergies to thyme, basil, mint or sage you may want to stay away from oregano as well considering they are of the same family.
As always seek a professional herbalist for the proper applications to use this oil, and always consult with your doctor before trying anything new whether its natural or not.

Thanks I got this oil for my cats, but then forgot what I got it for or what is was used for. Now I remember, but I don't know the dosage. I did take a look at the link you had from Heritage and it was interesting. I am going to bookmark this hub.
Thank you rpalulis.
I'm loving these health packed tips and facts on oil.
I'm thrilled and very interested, do keep them coming!
I can see many benefits of Oregano oil, especially as the strongest most effective antibiotic known to man. It's just amazing how everything we need comes from this amazing earth.
Thank you so much for the fantastic research. :) Katie
My friend, I never knew about oil of oregano before. Because I just know this as an ingredients for pizza or other food. My big sister also use oregano. Again, you give us useful information. We should know about this. I give my thumbs up for you and I made this double with vote up. God bless you.
Your best friend, Prasetio
This hub is excellent, I must admit I think it is the best hub I have ever read, wow, thanks for this amazing information you are awesome and the best writer on hub pagees, love this hub rate way up up up love & peace darski
rpalulis, I did dilute it in some olive oil and put a few drops in my cats ear. I hope that the one tht is sick with cold/allergy for so long gets well with this. I also put some in the only indoor male cats ear(can only get him once in a while) and hopefully the wax will come loose and get out of that ear. He is like chasing a bullet around and if he even senses that I am going to do anything to him he runs before I even get to touch him.
I have a bad case of rosacea too and put some on my face and will see how that works.
Thanks once again for this hub and all this information.
Great hub, wish I had thought to write it...I have taken the pills, the oil and have the liquid, now for over one year...I also take Acai,,,I can honestly say I have NOT been sick now in over 3 years from anything...I take all kinds of herbs and have for the last 45 years...I am old you see...71 but feel great....:O) Hugs G-Ma
Well I guess it's 100% true....you do learn something new every day. Thank you very much for sharing this information.
My youngest daughter started care last year (she was home cared until the age of 3 1/2) and she has been sick constantly since going to daycare. I don't like giving her antibiotics unless I REALLY have to, but each time to talk to the doctor about ways to help boost her immune system it just get's brushed off....according to the Dr it's a 'normal stage' but it's been going on for a year now so it can't possibly be normal. I will look into oil of oregano some more, as I'd rather use natural therapy on my little angel.
Do you think this may help with my eczema? Any suggestion on a topical treatment for my skin condition? Thanks again :) Shaye
@How To Hub, have you thought of getting her and yourself using the Neti-pot. It does work!
Great page and advise here, natural is the route I most prefer before having to use over the counter medicine. Voted up, very useful too. A.B.
I come with happy news! I used this on my cats in the diluted for for three days. The first day was really quite and all were sedated like it said that one of the effects was this. The second day they were moving around and the thrid day it didn't seem to have any sleeping effect on them. I also put some Lysine in their food. This is said to stoo the the continual speading of colds and sinus infections in cats. The one that was the sickest for years (Little Bits) is now drying up in her sinuses. That is a VERY good thing. She and the others are now starting to act like playful kittens and it is such a joy to see.
As for my rosacea, the jury is still out. I will let you know in about another week.
Tahnak you, Thank you, Thank you for this information. I shall be adding your link to my cat hubs.
Wow what a week this was.
After stopping the treatment for three days and only putting it in her ear, her sickness came back with a vengeance. I ended up using it as nasal drops to get to the source of the infections and had to keep it up for a whole week twice a day. It did work with my persistence. I may write a hub on this experience--or not. I am not a Vet, but I cannot trust the ones around here, they either charge out the butt for their services or they loose them. I wrote a hub about the one sick cat that one of the vets lost, A Trip With Thomas, and he has never shown back up to my house since then.
Wow, this is amazing stuff. I am just starting to learn about the many applictions for natural products like this!
Thank you so much for sharing!
This is valuable info, very thorough. I love Dr. Mercola and respect his opinion, highly. Thank you so much for writing this Hub. I am going to print a copy to give to my family.
Wow! Once again being schooled! This is something worth looking into, as once some kind of icky thing gets in our home, it seems to go from person to person! I think I will do some further research since I am pretty anemic, but it is definitely an option for the rest of my family! Don't forget to link up your lavender & patchouli hubs here :) Voted & rated! They should have you on the Today Show or something teaching about all this stuff!
Nice rpalulis! Dr. Mercola is pretty sharp! He has some of the best advice.
Great article, never knew about this.
I never knew that any part of oregano had any medicinal values...but there it is. I wonder if there are any benefits to oregano overall as it happens to be a staple ingredient in almost everything I cook.
Very interesting and engaging hub.
I haven't tried oil of oregano, I'll have to get some the next time I go to the health food store. I cook with a lot of garlic which is also a natural antibiotic. Always enjoy learning about new natural remedies.
I have heard of it, but not as an antibiotic. My father used it for his pain swore that it helped him better then the oxycodone does, but after his divorce his ex wife kept the book they ordered it from. Guess I better look into this for him as I would prefer him to use something natural. thank you for this delightful article.
can i give oregano oil to my cat that has URI?
I recently started taking Oreganol p73.I am so grateful to my sister who bought it for me.I was born with an immune disorder, genetic anemia, and bleeding disorder, and have been having serious immune crises lately.I have never been able to take antibiotics or medicines, even tylenol gives me serious anaphalectic reactions.I get very sick from common germs, and think the positive immune boosting effects outweigh the "stated" effects on anemia and bleeding.I am taking organic molasses to replace iron/b vitamins.also,it has healed all my rashes and cuts, immediately. Before, the tiniest paper cut would get infected.I have noticed a great improvement in my stomach ulcer, and no longer get daily headaches/migraines.this stuff is amazing! about CATS-I would do more research on the effects on cats, knowing most phenols are toxic to cats.I'm not sure if its only certain types of phenols,or if only synthetic ones or natural ones are included.this is a very worthy research project since the oreganol has done so much for me.As an animal activist, constantly "fixing" stray animals,i would love to be able to use it on the animals, without worrying about toxic effects.if anyone here finds any studies,Please email me asap(animalempath@hotmail.com).P.S.-don't forget to watch Dr. Cass Ingram (oreganol, and now chaga) on youtube.I have so much respect for him.he has been there from the beginning, when all alternative medicine was punished by raids and jail.I remember him from the early 80's,friends with gary null (http//www.garynull.com),who had him on his show.Because of people like these, and the others like them, who suffered and persevered, and never gave up, we have come a long, long way, and now benefit from all these wonderful natural medicines!
Pls how can i get this oil of Oregano. Am writing from Nigeria. Reply to this email- ken_paschal@yahoo.com
